Catalyst Black 0.13

0.13 Patch Notes

Posted On September 21, 2021

Greetings, Chosen!

The excitement is back! Introducing Paragon Arenas, a battleground home to contests of honor. This new rotating 3V3 mode pits players against each other in a 7-round fight for glory, providing a chance to rank up at every corner. While waiting for the next round to start, observe other battles from above or cheer on your team if you get knocked out.

To elevate the sense of celebration, we’re bringing new prestige systems. After each match, Honor Points are gained or lost based on the outcome. Earn enough points in a mode to unlock various Honor Ranks, setting you apart from others. Titles also debut in 0.13 and are awarded for leveling up, achieving a high Honor Rank, and special events down the road. Choose a title to showcase both in and out of the game.

We’re not done yet. Patch 0.13 features a new Play Menu designed to connect you with friends — and a whole lot more. Check out what’s fresh below, then head over the official Discord to share your feedback.

New Mode: Paragon Arenas

In the Paragon Arenas, players are pitted against each other in teams of 3. But make no mistake: This is a solo game mode. Your goal is to win individual matches through the 7-round battle, ranking up in the process. Although teamwork is a necessity, don’t get too comfortable with your allies. Each round, the teams randomly shuffle amongst the 24-player queue with the map posing different perks and challenges.

This new game mode takes place in a battleground of 4 arenas and 4 corresponding observation decks. While waiting for the next round to begin, use the gateways on either side of the observation decks to check out the other battles or watch your arena finish up. When it’s time to jump back into the ring, you’ll automatically be teleported to a fresh playing field.

The Arenas take great advantage of our drop-in drop-out feature. You can leave a match and reap the benefits just as quickly as you can join one. Use the time between rounds to plan new strategies, and don’t forget to bring your best loadout. You’ll need it.

At the start, bots and low level players will be able to access Arenas. This will allow the community to help us improve the mode. In the future, we intend for Arenas to be exclusive to high level players, fostering a more intense combat experience.

Honor Points & Honor Ranks

At long last, you can finally brag about how much worse better you are than everyone else. Honor Points are gained or lost based on the outcome of a match. This number does not affect matchmaking, but instead is used to reach Honor Ranks.

Arenas and Eventide each have 7 unique Honor Ranks, which represent key Honor Point milestones. You can earn equippable titles for ranks 4 and above, granted in the Quest Hub. While Honor Points can only be seen by you, Honor Ranks can publicly represent your most arduous accomplishments in a given queue.

Titles from Honor Ranks are there to stay. Once earned, they become permanently available to showcase. However, your current Honor Points and Honor Ranks will rise and fall as you play — so battle wisely while chasing the top rank.

Titles

Titles are unlocked for accomplishing major feats, such as reaching a high Honor Rank or completing an achievement. Equip a title in your loadout to be seen by everyone on the friends menu and in-game scoreboard.

Each title you earn has a unique name and a rarity. Skill-based titles use Legendary and Mythic rarities, while flavor-based (more coming soon!) titles sport Chromatic. The more difficult a title is to unlock, the higher the rarity. Flaunt it if you’ve got it.

Play Menu Update

Upon opening the Play Menu, you’ll be greeted with a new look. A list of friends and recently encountered non-friends playing a match will appear, allowing you to drop-in and join their battle.

Economy Changes

  • Ascension
    • Due to the recent introduction of new progression systems, the earlier Ascension levels were easy to breeze through. To make this feel more rewarding, the pacing on lower levels has been slowed down. This change does not impact players above Ascension level 25.
  • Chests
    • Star Chests are 4x more likely to drop gear, while the probability of dropping a mod is greatly reduced. When it does drop a mod, it’s guaranteed to be an Epic.
    • Astral Chests drop 10 items, also with a higher chance of dropping gear instead of a mod.
    • When Star & Astral Chests drop gear, each non-weapon has 2x the weight compared to weapons.
  • Conquest Points
    • Paragon Arenas grants Conquest Points after each round, which are significantly shorter than any other method. Thus, the amount granted by other game modes no longer lined up with the time commitment. As such, all Conquest Point earnings and quest unlock values have been multiplied by 10.

Minor Changes

  • Heroes can no longer be attacked while blinking.
  • The large primal crystal grants full primal energy to its killer instead of dropping multiple pickups.
  • Co-op Slayer mode has been removed.
  • Squashed bugs! 🐞

Balance Changes

DEV NOTE: Weapons have been rebalanced for the purpose of creating more identity and diversity between how each weapon plays. Broadly speaking, the maximum health and movement speed bonuses for most weapons has been removed. Certain weapons now have one or the other and are generally focused around a mobile or survivable playstyle. Infusions have not been addressed as part of this pass, but will see a revision at a later date to bring the bonuses in line with the weapon’s primary purpose.
